Don’t Borrow Trouble

I was having a week.

Not necessarily a bad week. Just one of those weeks where life felt a little heavier than usual.

One, because I’m human. Two, because my three-year-old is away at the beach without me, and this is the longest we’ve ever been apart. And three, because something happened this week that made me feel like the safety of myself and my children could potentially be at risk.

And if you’re a mother, you already know what happens next.

That mama bear instinct kicks in.

The second you feel like something, or someone could get too close to your cubs, something primal takes over. You start thinking ten steps ahead. You make plans. Backup plans. Then backup plans for your backup plans.

I took precautions. I did what I felt I needed to do to protect myself and my children.

But then I did something else.

I started losing sleep.

My mind wouldn't shut off.

What if this happens?

What if that happens?

What if I missed something?

What if something goes wrong?

And somewhere between the millionth “what if” and staring at the ceiling at an ungodly hour, I had a little moment of clarity.

I had been borrowing trouble.

That phrase came from a television show playing in the background while I was praying for guidance. The character said, “Don't borrow trouble.”

And man…did I need to hear that.

Because how often do we live through things that haven't even happened yet?

We take today's peace and trade it for tomorrow's possibilities.

We rehearse disasters that may never happen.

We exhaust ourselves fighting battles that haven't even shown up.

And I realized something: I can be prepared without being afraid.

There is a difference.

I can protect my children. I can trust my instincts. I can take precautions. I can be aware of my surroundings.

And I can still give the things I cannot control to God.

Because if I truly believe that God walks with me, then I have to believe He is walking with my children too.

And then came the verse that felt like an answer:

Leviticus 26:6 — “I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid.”

There it was.

Peace.

Not a promise that nothing difficult will ever happen.

Not a promise that I won't ever have to protect the people I love.

But a reminder that fear doesn't have to own me.

So I took a deep breath.

I prayed.

And I handed God the things I couldn't carry anymore.

My mind finally became quiet.

And hopefully…I'll finally get some sleep. 😂

Maybe that's what faith looks like sometimes.

Not having all the answers.

Not knowing exactly what's going to happen.

Just knowing Who you're walking with.

And honestly, I think there's something fitting about putting that reminder into words while wearing a pair of Leviticus Fashions boots.

Because sometimes faith isn't about standing still.

Sometimes it's about putting your boots on, standing firmly in who you are, and continuing to walk forward, even when you can't see what's waiting around the corner.

The boots may help me walk with a little more confidence, but the peace?

That comes from somewhere much deeper.

I can talk to God all day.

And I've learned that if I get quiet enough…

He talks back.

So tonight, I'm putting my boots by the door, putting my worries in God's hands, and reminding myself:

I'm prepared.

I'm protected.

I'm loved.

And I'm not going to borrow trouble from tomorrow.

I'm going to walk through today.

One step at a time.
